Michiko Kitayama Skinner

Michiko is an Assistant Professor of costume design at the University of Miami. Originally from Tokyo, Japan, Michiko has been working in American Theater for over 15 years. She has designed both scenery and costumes for several regional theatres including Mill Mountain Theatre in Roanoke, Virginia.  She has also assisted well-known designers such as Martin Pakledinaz on Broadway, and worked at one of the largest costume shops in NYC, Parsons-Meares.  Recently Michiko worked as an Associate Costume Designer for a new musical, Take Flight, (songs by David Shire) which was directed by Amon Miyamoto and costume designed by Paul Tazewell.  This musical premiered in Tokyo, during November of 2007.  Michiko has worked for Miami-based Fresco Productions as a scenery and costume designer, and taken several shows to New York City’s Fringe Festival.  Fresco Production’s entry at the 2006 festival, The Penguin Tango, was crowned as Best of the Fest.  Her costume design of Woyzeck was chosen to enter Prague Quadrennial 2003 in Prague. In 2007, Michiko taught the summer program at the Obirin University in Tokyo.  Michiko has a BCA degree from Univ. of North Carolina at Charlotte and an MFA  degree from Ohio University.  She is a member of United Scenic Artists local 829.
